Spiritualism

Mediumship is closely linked with spiritualism, a religious movement founded on the belief that our lives continue after death and that contact between the spirit world and the living world can be made through mediums.

Spiritualism is a very personal religion, with no central authority or prescriptive dogma or belief system. It means different things to different people, depending on their thoughts, feelings, experiences and encounters with the spirit world. There are, however, many spiritualist churches across the world, where mediums gather and share personal experiences and worship.

Some of the general beliefs held by spiritualists are:

• Spiritualists believe in the Christian God.

• Communication can be made between the world of the living and the world of the dead through mediums, who are able to pick up on subtle wavelengths undetectable to most living people.

• The spirit world is a higher plane of existence than the earthly world, and spirits can therefore offer a more enlightened viewpoint on moral and religious matters than humans.

• Spirits can provide a communication link between humans and God.

• Our actions in our physical life have no bearing on what happens to our soul in the afterlife, as spirits themselves go through several planes of development, i.e. the spirit world is not a static place.
